St. Thomas to Tortola Ferry: Pick Your Port

Compare Road Town and West End arrivals, confirm your St. Thomas departure dock, and plan onward transfers before buying ferry tickets.

Choose a St. Thomas–Tortola ferry by its actual departure and arrival terminals: Road Town and West End are different destinations, and your onward transfer may matter more than the advertised sailing time.

Road Town or West End?

Tell your accommodation or charter base where you are coming from and ask which Tortola arrival is practical. BVI Tourism lists connections serving Road Town and West End; do not treat a ticket marked “Tortola” as a complete arrival plan.

Write the full terminal names beside your booking. Your driver needs the actual dock, and your host needs the arrival time for that specific service. If you change the sailing, update the pickup too.

Confirm your St. Thomas departure

BVI Tourism lists services from Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook. Confirm the terminal in the chosen operator’s booking calendar for your date, as well as the check-in cutoff. Do not head to the closest waterfront dock without checking.

For an airport arrival, ask the operator whether the connection is realistic with your flight time and baggage. Price the transfer and ask what happens if your flight is delayed. Separate flight and ferry purchases may leave you responsible for a missed connection.

What to check before paying

Compare the complete one-way or return quote, including baggage and any separately collected taxes or port charges. Ask whether changes are allowed and whether the return uses the same operator and terminal.

  • Exact travel date and both terminal names.
  • Document and entry-form requirements for each passenger.
  • Check-in cutoff and baggage allowance.
  • Return sailing, refund terms and ground pickup.

Build the onward day around arrival

Keep a fixed excursion away from a tight ferry connection. If your first priority is a villa check-in or provisioning, arrange those before adding sightseeing. Save the operator’s contact details and your host’s pickup instructions offline.

Use the Tortola guide to choose nearby food and activities after your transport is settled. If an international day trip does not leave enough time for your main activity and return, consider an overnight stay rather than relying on the last possible connection.
