WHY IT MATTERS

Contractors and residents hauling waste need to use the correct route and disposal area. The change is intended to reduce vehicle-control and unloading risks.

What you need to know

Virgin Gorda's dumpsite has a new haul road and dumping zone, the Department of Waste Management announced November 5. A less-steep approach and level platform are intended to help loaded vehicles descend, unload and turn safely.

The new zone takes construction debris, concrete, soil, fill and green waste. Household rubbish, bulk metal, tyres, batteries, oil, chemicals and hazardous or medical waste belong in other designated site areas, not this zone. Drivers should follow the supervisor's directions.

Site hours are 6 a.m.–4 p.m. weekdays, 6 a.m.–noon Saturday and 6–10 a.m. Sunday. Drivers are instructed to descend in low gear, avoid overtaking, secure brakes on level ground before unloading and lower tipping beds before moving.
