Queen Street closure and detours begin November 4

The next underground-power phase closes the Christiansted block between Prince Street and Queen Cross Street, with work scheduled Monday–Saturday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m.

WAPA says the next phase of its Feeder 1A underground electrical project begins Wednesday, November 4, closing Queen Street, also called Fred Thomas Drive, between Prince Street and Queen Cross Street in Christiansted.

Westbound Queen Street traffic will turn north on Queen Cross Street and then west on Company Street. Southbound King Cross Street traffic will be directed west on Company Street, with Prince Street providing the northbound continuation. King Cross Street will also be temporarily affected at the Queen Street intersection and is expected to reopen after that intersection work is complete.

Construction is scheduled Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Businesses will remain open and pedestrian access to homes and commercial properties will be maintained, but roadside parking will be limited near active work zones. WAPA warns that vehicles left in closed sections may be towed.

The $5.3 million FEMA-funded project is replacing overhead electrical infrastructure along Queen Street. WAPA expects construction to continue into early 2027; that is a project target, not a confirmed reopening date for each block.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT

WAPA should keep its detour map current and publish block-by-block completion notices, accessible pedestrian routes and any schedule changes before traffic patterns shift.
