BVI contribution amnesty can waive penalties through December 31

Eligible employers, self-employed people and voluntary contributors can seek a full waiver of accrued Social Security and NHI surcharges and penalties, but principal and current contributions remain due.

The BVI Social Security Board's Penalty and Surcharge Amnesty Programme is accepting applications through December 31 from business owners, employers, self-employed people and voluntary contributors with outstanding Social Security or National Health Insurance contributions.

A successful application may waive 100% of accrued surcharges and penalties. The underlying principal is not forgiven: applicants must either pay it in full or receive approval for a structured payment arrangement lasting no more than five years.

A payment plan normally requires a deposit of at least 20% of the amount owed. An applicant who owes both Social Security and NHI contributions must deposit at least 10% of each outstanding balance and must keep regular current contributions paid while also making plan installments.

Applications and supporting documents go to the Board's Collections Department. The government says the relief ends after December 31 and stricter statutory compliance and enforcement will begin in January 2027; applying does not guarantee approval or erase principal debt.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT

The Social Security Board should publish a downloadable application checklist, eligibility decision timeline and examples showing how deposits and five-year payment plans are calculated.
