BVI to activate early-warning systems for today’s ShakeOut

Test messages may be heard through sirens, the DDM app, emergency broadcasts and other channels; officials say the public is not required to act.

UPDATEUpdated October 16: The scheduled October 15 BVI system test has passed. The article remains as preparedness context; no outcome is inferred without a post-exercise agency report.

The BVI Department of Disaster Management says the National Early Warning Multi-hazard Alert System will be activated Thursday, October 15, as part of the territory’s ShakeOut earthquake exercise.

Test messages may be heard through early-warning sirens, the DDM app, emergency broadcasts and other alert systems. The bulletin does not publish a precise activation time, so residents should not assume the USVI’s separate 10:15 a.m. schedule applies in the BVI.

DDM encourages voluntary participation by practising Drop, Cover and Hold, followed by any other safety steps appropriate for a home, school or workplace. The agency says the public is not required to take action because the activation is a test.

The department’s notice is specific to the October 15 exercise. Any alert that does not clearly identify itself as a test should be assessed using the instructions issued through official emergency channels.
