The loss of more than $1 million in federal support dominated Thursday's Senate confirmation hearing for three nominees to the WTJX Board of Directors. Nominees Osbert E. Potter, Henry E. Schjang and Lisa Brown Williams discussed fundraising, financial oversight and the broadcaster's long-term stability with the Committee on Rules and Judiciary.
Potter, a former WTJX chief executive seeking another board term, said the station needs an experienced development officer to build revenue beyond government support. He also said traditional telethons are less effective and that WTJX must reach supporters through newer channels.
Schjang said he had discussed the station's finances with WTJX chief executive Tanya-Marie Singh and expressed concern that layoffs may become necessary. The hearing did not establish that layoffs have been approved, identify affected positions or provide a timeline.
The nominees also discussed credibility, younger audiences, infrastructure and WTJX's role in preserving Virgin Islands history and culture. All three advanced from committee and still require consideration by the full Legislature.
WTJX should publish a current budget summary showing the federal reduction, available replacement funding, fundraising targets and any staffing decisions before describing layoffs as likely or necessary.
