The University of the Virgin Islands submitted its formal show-cause response to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education by the September 1 deadline, President Safiya George told trustees Wednesday.
UVI remains accredited while the review continues. The accreditor's evaluation team is scheduled to visit September 24 and report its initial findings the following day. University operations, classes, student services and federal financial aid continue during the process.
The university has also completed a contingency teach-out plan built around three agreements with other institutions. A teach-out plan is a required student-protection measure if an institution ultimately cannot continue a program; its completion does not mean UVI is closing or has lost accreditation.
George also reported that government allotments are current and that UVI received $2.3 million appropriated for the territory's free-tuition program. The immediate accreditation decision remains unresolved pending the evaluation and later commission review.
UVI should maintain a public accreditation timeline with the submitted report, non-confidential supporting evidence, September visit milestones and plain-language explanations of each possible commission action so students can follow the process without relying on rumors.
