The University of the Virgin Islands asked the Middle States Commission on Higher Education to remove its Show Cause designation and instead place the institution on Probation or Warning, according to President Safiya George's report to trustees.
UVI submitted the request October 12 in response to the accreditor's follow-up review-team report. The request is not a decision: UVI remains accredited under Non-Compliance Show Cause status while the commission considers the case.
The university is scheduled to appear before Middle States on November 19. The commission's later action could accept, reject or otherwise modify UVI's requested status, so Probation or Warning should not be described as already granted.
UVI says work on overdue audits continues, with draft fiscal 2022 financial statements received from its external auditor. Trustees also approved governance policies and a fourth annual regular meeting as part of the response to accreditation concerns.
UVI should maintain a public accreditation timeline with the submitted report, non-confidential supporting evidence, September visit milestones and plain-language explanations of each possible commission action so students can follow the process without relying on rumors.
