USVI heat advisory runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday

NWS expects the highest heat risk in coastal, low-lying and urban areas before afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms.

A National Weather Service heat advisory covers St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and adjacent islands from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 6.

NWS says the conditions can worsen symptoms for people with chronic illness and increase heat-related illness among people without adequate cooling or hydration. Risk is highest in coastal areas, lowlands, interior valleys and urban zones.

Drink water, reduce strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours, use air conditioning when available and check on relatives and neighbors. Seek prompt help for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms may create a limited to elevated flood risk. NWS also lists a moderate rip-current risk; choose a guarded or more protected beach and swim near a lifeguard.
