FEMA has launched a direct online option for eligible U.S. Virgin Islands property owners and renters to obtain a National Flood Insurance Program quote and purchase coverage through FloodSmart.gov. Customers may still work with an insurance agent if they prefer.
The online process asks for basic building and coverage information, produces a quote and allows an eligible customer to complete the purchase or share the quote with an agent. FEMA says the option is available in participating NFIP communities nationwide, including the Virgin Islands.
Most new flood policies have a 30-day waiting period before coverage begins, with limited exceptions. Standard homeowners and renters policies generally do not cover flood damage, so a purchase made shortly before a storm should not be assumed to provide immediate protection.
USVI customers who encounter difficulty matching an estate, lot or nonstandard street address should use FloodSmart's support or a local insurance agent. FEMA's announcement expands the purchase channel but does not say that every territory-specific address problem has been resolved.
FEMA and the Lieutenant Governor's Office should publish USVI-specific instructions for estates and parcels that do not match standard mainland street-address formats.
