The National Weather Service has placed St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and adjacent islands under a heat advisory from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The notice says this level of heat can affect most people who are sensitive to heat, particularly those without effective cooling or adequate hydration.
High temperatures or elevated heat indices can worsen chronic conditions and increase the risk of heat-related illness. NWS says the risk is greatest in coastal areas, lowlands, interior valleys and urban zones.
Drink water regularly, limit direct sun and check on relatives and neighbors. Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning. Move anyone overcome by heat to a cool, shaded place; heat stroke is an emergency and requires a 911 call.
NWS also says showers and thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon. Seek shelter when thunder is heard, never drive through flooded roads and check the latest forecast before beach, boating or outdoor plans.
