St. Thomas reaches exceptional drought as water supplies tighten

St. Thomas is experiencing exceptional drought, according to the National Weather Service's September 24 statement. St. Croix and St. John remain in extreme drought. The classifications reflect the September 22 U.S. Drought Monitor assessment.

The statement reports limited water supplies across the islands, with production roughly matching consumption. It also describes falling groundwater levels, crop losses, livestock pressures and increasing wildfire concerns.

NWS advises careful water use. Residents and businesses should check current utility and emergency notices for any service changes; the drought classification itself does not establish a new islandwide water-rationing schedule.
