DPNR's latest posted beach notice says its Beach Water Quality Monitoring Program did not perform water-quality tests during the past week. The agency therefore provides no new sample results to replace its October 16 bulletin.
That October 16 testing found elevated enterococci at Cane Bay, Grapetree, New Fort Louise Augusta, Princess, Prosperity, Protestant Cay and Shoy's on St. Croix. Without new testing, WelcomeToVI is retiring the seven-beach alert rather than presenting the old list as a current weekly result.
The lack of a new sample does not establish that those beaches are safe or that bacteria remain elevated. It means the current status is unverified, and beachgoers should look for a newer DPNR result before relying on either conclusion.
DPNR says it does not anticipate negative impacts from recent rain but advises avoiding storm-water runoff if heavy rainfall continues. Residents can request current water-quality information from the Division of Environmental Protection at 340-773-1082 on St. Croix or 340-774-3320 on St. Thomas.
DPNR should publish a dated, mobile-friendly beach map with sample values, retest dates and a clear removal notice for each advisory.
