New SNAP requirements could interrupt benefits for thousands beginning September 1

New work and volunteer requirements tied to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program take effect September 1. The Department of Human Services continues to estimate that roughly 5,000 residents could potentially be affected, but officials have not said how many people have failed to complete the steps needed to preserve benefits.

DHS told the Continuum of Care Council on Homelessness that it expects increased demand early next week from residents who discover an interruption when checking their EBT accounts. The department is arranging a multi-partner outreach effort intended to help people correct qualification problems and seek restoration of assistance for the following month.

Housing and nonprofit representatives warned that lost food assistance could push more households toward food pantries and unstable housing. Those projections are concerns raised by service providers, not confirmed outcomes; the immediate verified issue is that the rule change is approaching and some recipients may need help documenting compliance.
