JFL suspends outside medical-waste intake during disposal work

A specialized vendor is scheduled to begin collection Wednesday, but the hospital has not announced when private and community providers may resume deliveries.

Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital has stopped accepting medical waste from private and community health providers until further notice while it works through accumulated material and a longer-running disposal problem.

A hospital spokesperson told the Virgin Islands Consortium that a specialized vendor completed an assessment and is scheduled to begin collecting waste on Wednesday, October 7. The material is being packaged for shipment off-island, a process the hospital says requires careful handling and transportation.

The scheduled start does not confirm that collection has occurred or establish when the backlog will be cleared. JFL did not provide a date for resuming outside intake.

Private medical providers should confirm current disposal arrangements with the appropriate regulator or waste contractor rather than assume the JFL service is available.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT

JFL and environmental regulators should publish interim disposal guidance for outside providers, vendor collection milestones and a verified date before the intake service resumes.
