Holsum recalls spinach tortillas distributed in the USVI

Nine lots of eight-count packages may contain Blue No. 1 and Yellow No. 5 that are missing from the label; consumers should match the UPC, lot and expiration date.

Holsum de Puerto Rico has recalled about 9,602 packages of its large spinach flour tortillas distributed across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands because two artificial color additives are not disclosed on the label.

The affected product is the eight-count, 20-ounce package with UPC 810023430629. The nine recalled lots are 26187, 26195, 26210, 26216, 26224, 26239, 26250, 26251 and 2026261, with expiration dates ranging from October 4 through December 17, 2026.

FDA classified the voluntary action as a Class II recall on October 14. The missing ingredients are FD&C Blue No. 1 and FD&C Yellow No. 5; Yellow No. 5 can cause allergic-type reactions in some sensitive people.

Consumers should not eat a matching package and should return it to the place of purchase or discard it. The federal record does not identify how many packages reached the USVI or name the local retailers that received them.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT

FDA and the distributor should publish a USVI retailer list and territory-specific package count, then post a dated completion notice when the recall closes.
