Suspect arrested in killing of Gerell Reed on St. Thomas

VIPD says detectives arrested 23-year-old J’vonte Mercer on St. Croix after identifying him as a suspect in the August 27 fatal shooting.

UPDATEUpdated Aug. 31: VIPD has arrested and charged a suspect. The earlier briefing said no suspect had been identified; that information is now superseded.

The V.I. Police Department has arrested 23-year-old J’vonte Mercer in connection with the killing of 21-year-old Gerell L. Reed, who was found unresponsive inside a vehicle on Judy M. Gomez Highway early Thursday.

Police said ShotSpotter detected multiple gunshots at approximately 2:49 a.m. on August 27. A resident then reported a vehicle that had struck a wall. Responding officers found Reed with apparent gunshot wounds, and emergency personnel determined that he had died.

VIPD says detectives identified Mercer during the investigation and learned Saturday that he was on St. Croix preparing to travel to the U.S. mainland. Officers located and arrested him without incident, then returned him to St. Thomas for processing.

Mercer faces homicide, first- and third-degree assault, and unauthorized-firearm charges. Bail was set at $1 million, and he was remanded pending an advice-of-rights hearing. The charges are allegations; guilt must be determined in court.

Police continue to ask anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-774-2211, extensions 5555 or 5556; 340-714-9830; 911; or Crime Stoppers V.I. at 800-222-8477.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT

VIPD should publish consistent, dated follow-up notices when a suspect is identified, an arrest is made or a case remains unresolved, while maintaining a public territorywide homicide dashboard that clearly explains how cases are counted.
