A federal proposal to rename the Christiansted Bandstand for Peter G. Thurland Sr. has cleared another procedural step in the U.S. House. H.R. 8121 was formally reported with an amendment on August 27, committed to the Committee of the Whole House and placed on the Union Calendar.
The bill has not passed the House and the bandstand has not yet been renamed. If enacted, it would designate the structure at Christiansted National Historic Site as the Peter G. Thurland, Sr., Bandstand and update references to the landmark in federal records and maps.
Thurland was a Christiansted-born musician, Navy bandsman, master craftsman and cabinetmaker who helped construct the waterfront bandstand. He later founded the St. Croix Community Band in 1938, trained young musicians and led free monthly concerts for decades.
The designation still requires action by the full House, the Senate and the president before becoming law. The latest congressional action makes the measure eligible for House consideration but does not guarantee a vote or final passage.
The delegate's office and National Park Service should maintain a short public status page that clearly separates committee action, House passage, Senate action and enactment. If the bill becomes law, the page should also explain the timing for signage, maps and any public dedication so residents and visitors know when the designation is official.
