CBP confirms maritime-surveillance systems at two USVI locations

Federal procurement records disclose two operating sites but withhold their locations, capabilities and USVI-specific enforcement results.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has disclosed that its Maritime Approaches Surveillance Towers network includes systems operating at two locations in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The disclosure appears in an October 1 amendment to a federal request for information covering maintenance and support for radar, camera, vessel-identification and communications equipment used for maritime monitoring.

CBP did not identify which islands host the systems, their precise locations, their local surveillance range, the retention period for collected data or the agencies that can access it. WelcomeToVI is not inferring any location beyond the two USVI sites confirmed in the record.

The amended request is an industry-information request, not a contract award. A separate planned federal procurement for additional systems is still projected for solicitation and later award.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT

CBP should publish a USVI-specific privacy and oversight summary explaining permitted data uses, retention, access controls and aggregate enforcement outcomes without disclosing security-sensitive site coordinates.
